It is a response to the rise of neo-shamanism which produced the idea that one single Native American religion exists and is accessible to anyone. In fact there are 566+ tribes with varying religions and religious ceremonies. While many Natives do adhere to the Native American Church, other Natives identify as Christian, Agnostic, non-religious, etc. This new age spirituality and their rituals are to Native culture what the fortune cookie is to Chinese culture; fortune cookies are a purely American phenomenon with no connection to China.
